6 Things You Can Learn From Your Job Search

6 Things You Can Learn From Your Job Search I moved across the country without a job. I began my job search earlier this year and had a solid idea of the type of company I wanted to join and the skills I have to offer. With my vision set, I outlined a goal to network and submit for two opportunities per day in order to increase my chances of discovering my ideal fit. After a 20-hour road trip, I arrived in Milwaukee, WI on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The next day, I had my first interview. Six weeks later, to the day, I accepted an incredible job offer. Here is what I learned from this experience. Know that it will be. No. Matter. What. Your temporary designation of “unemployed” ignites anxiety in others. Several of my friends and family members were fear-stricken when I chose to move without a job. In the face of doubts from others, I had to remind myself daily that I would be okay, that the perfect role and I would find each other. To keep my mind on the positive track, I journaled and listened to “you’re good enough, you’re smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like you” recordings. Okay not really. But I did listen to a few Esther Hicks you tube videos to keep my thoughts in the right vibration. Find ways to earn $ in the interim. I joined Care.com and was fortunate to get a part time, flexible caregiving schedule that still accommodated my interviews and networking events. Being financially responsible, I had money saved, but earning extra cash helped offset the cost of manicures and vegetables to keep me polished and healthy going into meetings. Learn how to bounce back from rejection. There are a million reasons you didn’t get the job. One friend told me that because my address said Florida, the recruiter immediately tossed it in the “no” pile. Another time, I hastily updated my resumé and misspelled a word; I was mortified. Sometimes companies do not get back to you at all. Whatever the scenario, follow up, be gentle with yourself and move on, remembering what my grandma always says: everything happens for the best. Pace yourself. Beware of the companies that want to move fast or sell you on a job that does not feel right. In one instance, I was meeting with several companies, and as soon as one of the companies found out with whom I was meeting, they made me an offer the next day. Another time, I had a meeting where the Director told me I had the perfect profile for a completely different role than the one we were discussing. Maybe the other role was perfect for you. Maybe it was not what you envisioned at all (true in my case). Either way, take your time. You’re interviewing them, too. This is a major decision; you will likely spend equal or even more time with your coworkers than you will with your family. Identifying shared values and work ethic with your future company is paramount, regardless of how long it  takes. Leverage connections. Or not. In nearly all of my previous roles, it was through a friend, former coworker, or family member that I got my foot in the door to ultimately obtain my position at the company. Given my  previous  experiences, it seemed like the trusted referral  method would be the way I obtained my next career move. It wasn’t. My (triple-spell checked) resume got me in. Yes, tap your connections, and also remember that you are enough. Aim For 100% authenticity. Let your professional personality shine. Be genuine at  each touch-point, including the questions you ask during your interviews and in your handwritten thank you notes. People want to know about your accomplishments and what makes you special and they can discern your level of thoughtfulness and investment from all of your communication. I asked the Director about his birthday celebration with his family (he had mentioned in our first meeting that it was coming up). I asked another contact about her son’s wedding the previous weekend. Getting to know each other is a two-way street. Prepare for queries such as: what book are you reading, what activities do you enjoy in your free time, etc. Above all, smile, solidly stand in your (obviously amazing) shoes, and be true to your self. Find Company Email Addresses the Easy Way in 2019 (Updated)

Find Company Email Addresses the Easy Way in 2019 (Updated) Have you found recruiters you want to contact, but you can’t find company email addresses for them? An AvidCareerist reader finds himself in that situation:Hi Donna,I was researching how to get in touch with Deloitte recruiters and came across your article about how to find Big 4 recruiters on LinkedIn.I have had success in locating them. However, their contact information isnt provided unless I have LinkedIn’s Premium service or their actual email.I am a graduating senior. Deloitte doesnt recruit from my campus, so I am wondering how to contact the recruiters I’ve identified. I studied Computer Science and am looking to get into consulting.Thanks,Chung(2019 Update: LinkedIn now lets members choose who can see their contact information.)Three Fast Ways to Find an Email Address  To help Chung, I shared three fast ways to find companies email addresses, Hunter.io, a Google technique, and a company website technique.Hunter.ioFirst, as of 2019, I like the email finder service, Hunt er.io. Thanks to Chris Morton for introducing me to this excellent service (see comments below)!Hunter allows 50 free searches per month. After that, you pay $49 per month for 1,000 requests (BTW, not an affiliate). The easiest way to use Hunter is to install the Chrome extension. Then watch this one-minute video on how to use it:If you dont want to install the extension, you can also go to Hunter.io directly and search company domain names for email addresses as shown in the video above. Also, note that Hunter gives you the companys most common email syntax. If your recruiter isnt explicitly listed, you can:Infer the persons email address from the syntax.Go to Hunter.io.Click Verifier on the top horizontal rail.Insert your inferred address and click to see if its deliverable. If not, check other listed syntaxes. All in all, this is a fabulous semi-automation of a tedious process!Additional Email Finder ResourcesBeyond Hunter.io, other resources mentioned in the comments below include:Ae roLeads.comLusha.coProphetSearchSherlock.comI have used Prophet a bit and found it helpful. Im not familiar with the three other tools.GoogleNow, for the tedious approach â€" Google. If I know where the person works, I find their company’s primary URL and then use Google to determine the companys email address syntax. My search looks like this:*@deloitte.com AND emailI scan my results until I see an email address I can use to decipher the company’s syntax for email addresses. The Deloitte search got me what I needed on page one of my Google results. This method is effective about 90% of the time. However, I would only use it if I was out of free searches on Hunter and didnt want to spend $49.The Companys Website NewsroomFinally, I visit the “Newsroom” page of the company’s website. They often list the email addresses of their internal public relations people in a “Contacts” section â€" or at the end of their press releases. You can use that information to peel their email address syntax. This approach works about half the time. When You Can’t Find Company Email AddressesSometimes, every approach to find a companys email address fails. When that happens, get a Premium account on LinkedIn. Its free for 30 days. Then, send the recruiter a LinkedIn message or InMail. Recruiters tend to read their inbound LinkedIn correspondence. As a last resort, pick up the phone and call the recruiter. You will probably have to leave a voice mail. Share your elevator pitch, the URL of your LinkedIn profile, and your phone number. Rehearse until you sound like someone you would want to call back.Is a Recruiters Email Address Chungs Best Bet?In Chungs case, trying to connect directly with Deloittes recruiters might not be as effective as a referral from a professor or a fellow alum.I advised him to ask his professors if they have contacts at Deloitte â€" thats how I got my job there.Chung can also use LinkedIn to find fellow alums with this search:People.Current Companies: Deloitte.Schools: [the name of his school].Many companies give referred candidates priority attention. What Worked for You?While thats how I advised Chung, I’m also curious to hear how you all find company email addresses and how you connect with recruiters. Please comment â€" you can see it makes for a better post!Image: Fotolia/MG Updated July 2019 2015 2019, Donna Svei. 4 steps to take if you decide you hate your course at uni

4 steps to take if you decide you hate your course at uni It can often feel like you spend the majority of your academic life preparing for the move to university choosing subjects at school based on the degree youd like to study, and carrying out voluntary or extracurricular work to improve your chances of getting a uni place. So what if, after all that hard work, you decide you hate your course, or even university in general? Sounds like a nightmare, right? Well were here to tell you its a lot more common than youd think. There are plenty of options available to you if you decide to make a change, and hopefully these tips and advice will make it a much less scary and stressful process. Don’t panic Deciding that you hate your course or university after already spending a considerable amount of time there isnt the best place to find yourself in.  But try not to panic. You’re certainly not the first person to find yourself in this situation, and you won’t be the last. This one issue isnt going to define the rest of your life, and youll still be able to achieve all your goals, even if it takes you a bit longer to get there. If you really hate university, dont feel like you have to keep going. Society places pressure on young people get get a degree, but you can absolutely be successful and happy without a one, especially if you’re saved years of upset and suffering by doing something you really dont enjoy. Just take a deep breath and start thinking about what exactly it is you want to do for your career. And if you dont have a clue? Thats absolutely fine as well, theres no harm in taking some time out to figure it all out. Talk to someone Dont keep your worries and concerns bottled up, youll feel so much better if you talk it through with someone. Try and figure out exactly what you’re feeling what do you hate about university? Is it the course you’re doing? Or the particular university that you’re studying at? Is university as a whole just not for you? Once you’ve pinpointed the specific problem,  it’ll be much easier to figure out what to do next. They might be able to suggest a solution or option that you hadnt considered before, helping you figure out your next move. Remember there are loads of options Most people in this situation feel like they have no option but to stick their degree out until the bitter end, when in fact the opposite couldnt be more true. Make sure to use the resources available to you consult the internet, social media or university careers advisors and tutors. You dont want to make a decision and then realise at a later date there was something else would have suited you better, so make sure you’re as informed as you can be. There are countless options available. If  youre not a fan of your particular degree subject, you could look into transferring to another one. If its in a very similar subject this is often super easy and can even be done mid-term, without having to go back and complete modules. Think switching from English Literature to English Language. But even if you want to swap to a completely different course, its often still possible. Just bear in mind this might involve starting from scratch next year. If it’s the university itself you find yourself disliking, then its often easy enough to transfer to a different institution. If this isnt an option, you can always drop out and reapply to a different university next year. This handy webpage explains everything you need to know. You could also take a gap year too, if you need some time to think about what you want to do next, or get involved in other exciting experiences.  You could always use the free time to travel, or get a job. Do whats right for you Don’t make your decision on what to do next based on what you think you should do, either. You have to make sure that this is the right choice for you, and not what your family or friends think you should be doing. Whether you want to change course, university or get a job or apprenticeship, if you can do it, then do it. If youre happy youre far more likely to go on to become successful and fulfil your goals. Dont stick something out if its making you unhappy. Find something you love and start to feel positive about the next chapter of your life. Connect with Debut on  Facebook,  Twitter,  and  LinkedIn  for more careers insights.

How to Make Your Social Networking Work for You, Not Against You

How to Make Your Social Networking Work for You, Not Against You Networking has changed in many different ways over the last several years. Nowadays, many people who attend actual networking events are already familiar with the people in attendance, even though they’ve never actually met before. The power of social networking is phenomenal and plays a significant role in c-level personal branding. Everything you do online is critiqued and criticized, so it can be easy to make mistakes and derail your job search. Here are a few effective ways to make your social networking efforts work in your favor. Make Engaging And Insightful Posts Before you even begin reaching out to potential connections, see if a professional LinkedIn profile writer can help you optimize your profile as much as possible. Once you’ve got the basics covered, then put together a string of insightful posts that are attractive for your targeted audience. This should include a mix of original thoughts, ideas or article, as well as articles from other sources. And when you identify people you want to connect with, start sharing their articles and posts as well and they will take notice of you. Interact With People Appropriately You definitely don’t want to appear to be a stalker, but you also want to reach out to people appropriately to demonstrate your c-level personal branding. Targeting people on LinkedIn or other social media platforms means identifying people who work for companies you may be interested in working for. It could also mean connecting with people and developing mutually-beneficial professional relationships with them. You can start off by making subtle comments on their social media posts and eventually reaching out to them to introduce yourself. Build Your Online Brand And Work Towards Meeting In Person A big part of c-level personal branding online starts with LinkedIn profile development. A solid profile is attractive and can tell anyone who visits it a lot about who you are. Once you’ve interacted with a connection for a while and can see the value of meeting them in person, don’t hesitate to extend an invitation to them to do so. However, without building this social networking relationship upfront, the chances of them accepting your invitation are very low. Developing positive social networking relationships can open up doors to many different opportunities in your future. At Professional Resume Services, we believe LinkedIn profile development is a critical aspect of your job search efforts. Too many executives make critical mistakes with their social networking and they damage their job search as a result. The main thing to remember is to always be conscious of what you post online and ask yourself if it helps your c-level personal branding or hurts it. To learn more about how social networking works and how you can benefit from it, feel free to contact us at any time.
